Grammy Award-winning artist Derek Minor (@thederekminor) is set to host We Own Now’s (@WeOwnNowOrg) 2nd Annual ‘Ownership Is The New Black’ symposium at The Wharf (Union Stage) in Washington D.C. on May 11th, in partnership with prestigious sponsors The Rockefeller Foundation and The Clapham Group. This high-profile event, scheduled from 7-9 pm, will be accompanied by additional activations on May 9th and 10th as preludes to the main gathering.
The symposium will feature two insightful panels focusing on bridging the racial wealth gap and a screening of the first episode of the Nashville-based non-profit’s mini-doc. The premiere will be accompanied by 15-minute discussions and will conclude with an exclusive performance by Minor, showcasing music from his upcoming ‘Nobody’s Perfect’ LP.
The previous year’s event boasted notable appearances from entrepreneur educator Dee-1 (@Dee1music), Spotify Frequency’s Foggie Raw (@foggieraw), Aaron Cole, Propaganda, The New Respects, Greg Johnson, nobigdyl., Ja’Ron Smith, Canon, and Nena Ugwuomo. Supporting Minor were team members Mimi McCarley (Collab Music Network / Nashville Is Not Just Country Music), Mark Rogers (The Clapham Group), Phebe Meyer (The Center for Christianity and Public Life), and Art Hooker (New Metropolitan).
In a conversation with WNXP, the Reflection Music Group head shared the inspiration behind We Own Now (W.O.N.):
“The idea for Ownership is the New Black came from the realization that while music can bring awareness to problems, it doesn’t always solve them. I believe that when people work, they should own their work – and that’s something everyone can agree on. This initiative aims to address the racial wealth gap, which is a significant issue. We’re exploring ways to help Black people overcome barriers to building wealth.”
