When Taj Sohal, the city’s youngest restaurateur, opened Mood Swings Food Hall (1625 1st St NW) last month, she aimed to solve a common dining dilemma: deciding what to eat. The innovative concept features a rotating menu and cocktail list that changes each month, promising a fresh culinary adventure for every visit.
Sohal drew inspiration from her indecisive eating habits. She aims to create a space where people can explore diverse flavors and bond over shared meals and drinks. Mood Swings showcased classic American fare for its inaugural month, but March brings a new theme: the bold tastes of Mexico.

The current menu boasts a variety of appetizers, tacos, and quesadillas, with plenty of options for vegetarians. Standout items include Mexican street corn, guacamole, and an array of taco fillings like Baja fish, shrimp, steak, and cauliflower. To wash it all down, the food hall offers a Mexican-inspired cocktail list featuring classic/spicy/cranberry margaritas and palomas that perfectly complement the flavors on the plate. And for those with a sweet tooth, red velvet and chocolate fudge cake await.
But Mood Swings isn’t just a destination for dinner. During the week, the food hall caters to remote workers, offering coffee, tea, baked goods, and Wi-Fi – making it an ideal spot to enjoy a change of scenery, a quick lunch, or an afternoon cocktail.
As Sohal puts it, “Food has the power to bring people together.” With its lively atmosphere, dynamic menus, and commitment to culinary exploration, Mood Swings Food Hall is poised to become a destination for D.C. food and drink enthusiasts, both locals and tourists alike. I can’t wait to see what’s on the menu next month.
