An enchanting evening unfolded in Northwest D.C. as magic carpets, gold sequin gowns, and tuxedos took center stage under the stars. On Thursday, the rooftop of the MLK Library became a mystical castle of shimmer and color as Portland Trail Blazers forward Jerami Grant and the Hour Generation Foundation hosted the inaugural Dream Gala. This storybook-themed event seamlessly blended philanthropy and fashion to advocate for youth literacy.
“One of the things that the foundation does is just makes dreams come true for children, youth, and the communities in which they live,” said Sherida Turner, treasurer of the Hour Generation Foundation. “Jerami has a passion for the youth. That’s his dream and mission, so we’re just here to support that on his behalf.”
The Dream Gala attracted hundreds of literacy advocates, culture shifters, and philanthropists, all united to raise funds and awareness for local literacy initiatives. Inspired by the foundation’s Hour Story Time program, which promotes reading through direct engagement, the night featured live music, jazz performances, and appearances by notable figures, including musician IDK and authors such as Jason Reynolds and Christina Wilds.
“It’s so important for me to be part of an event like this because, when the pandemic hit, literacy declined, especially for children,” Wilds shared. “To partner with someone like Jerami, passionate about literature and Black family literacy, I couldn’t pass up the chance.”
Grant founded the Hour Generation Foundation to empower underserved youth by providing them with the tools and services they need to reach their full potential. Originally centered on reading and education, the foundation now includes wellness initiatives, tutoring programs, food distribution, and an aviation program.
Raised in the DMV area and a DeMatha Catholic High School graduate, Grant shared how community service was ingrained in him from a young age. “I was very aware of what I wanted to do if I ever made it, and I’ve been extremely blessed to be in a position to give back,” he said. “Growing up in this community, I understand its needs, and it’s important for me to give back in a way that opens eyes for others to do the same.”
He emphasized that the Dream Gala reflected the foundation’s roots in education and literacy. “Our mission is to empower youth through education, focusing heavily on literacy. It’s about understanding where knowledge and empowerment come from—books,” Grant explained. “Tonight aligns perfectly with that mission.”
A silent auction was held as part of the event, with proceeds going toward increasing resources and advancing youth initiatives. Beverly Grant-Holston, vice president of the Hour Generation Foundation, noted the importance of partnerships with the MLK Library in ensuring long-term success.
“We often hear, ‘Why is there so much going on?’ But the need is everywhere,” Grant-Holston said. “Even if it’s just one kid at a time, we’re committed to making a difference.”
With the Dream Gala as a shining example, the Hour Generation Foundation continues to advocate for youth literacy, creating a brighter future, one book at a time.
