Alex Love, @alexlovelegit

Artist Alex Love is dedicated to spreading the love. Her open format sets cater to all ages and communities, and you can catch her live at The Dirty Goose, The Baltimore Eagle and Hill Prince. Love is also the general manager and music curator at Union Market’s immersive exhibition space Disco DC. Their newly opened experience “Disco to the Go-Go” is a blend of funk, disco and go-go and will be showing through March 2022.

DJ Bast, @itsBast

DJ Bast originally hails from the Bronx but has called the DMV home since age 13. She keeps Isaiah Rashad, TiaCorine and Baby Keem in heavy rotation and is currently listening to Jordan Ward’s Remain Calm. Formerly a resident DJ at Velvet Lounge (RIP), you now can catch her live every month at The Baltimore Eagle’s drag show and she’ll be featured on the Nov 2 installment of Cool Kid Vinyl owner, Matt Talley’s new spot Bonita’s Favorite Radio Show. Bast is also the branding director for streetwear brand, Gnarwhalz, and will be spinning at an upcoming pop-up planned for the end of the year.  

DJ Bri Mafia, @djbrimafia

DJ Bri Mafia is best known for her 2020 “4theDMV” mixes, exclusively featuring artists from the area. What started as virtual streams, evolved into live artist showcases and she’s now curating her own solo events hosted and DJed by her. She keeps Curren$y, Rico Nasty and 21 Savage in heavy rotation and is currently listening to Young Roddy’s God Family Money. You can catch the first instalment of her new event series on November 14 at The Crown in Baltimore.

Farrah Flosscett, @farrahflosscett

Artist Farah Floscett has been a fixture on the local music scene for over a decade. She keeps Pharrell, Kanye, Cudi and Erykah Badu in heavy rotation and is currently listening to Dom Kennedy’s From the Westside With Love Three. You can catch Farrah live at her 12 Stories residency and Fridays at noon on 96.3 WHUR. She’s also the co-founder of the music collective, Throwing Shade, currently spinning every Thursday at Capo Deli. Next up for Throwing Shade is a DMV showcase at Miami Art Basel hosted in collaboration with F.A.M.E Worldwide and Adobo DMV.

Franky J, @frankyj.co

DJ Franky J is a product of Word, Beats & Life Academy, DC’s longest-running hip-hop-based arts education nonprofit. She keeps Aaliyah, Kaytranada, and Timbaland in heavy rotation and is currently listening to Timbaland & Magoo’s recently rereleased Welcome to Our World. Franky is also a personal stylist developing a t-shirt line celebrating women DJs. The collection is slated to drop in 2022 and in the meantime, you can catch her live on Eaton Hotel’s radio show Occupying Space.

DJ Geena Marie, @djgeenamarie

Geena Marie began spinning in 2014 after producing a short doc on DJ Nativesun who encouraged her to explore the craft. She now hosts her own radio show 50/50FM every other Tuesday on Eaton Radio where she keeps Kaytranada, Ego Ella May, and KMB in heavy rotation. You can catch Geena live at Wild Days, Hill Prince, and the newly opened private membership club, The Gathering Spot.

Henrietta Stack$, @crystalalma

Crystal Williams’ artist name honors the immortal Henrietta Lacks and her complicated legacy as the mother of modern medicine. Stack$ mixes are best suited for a Sunday morning groove and keep Kaytranada, Masego, and Van Jess in heavy rotation. Williams also serves as the Operations & Public Relations Director at a local creative agency, Jax Hub, and you can catch her live at her residency with the Sandlot Georgetown.

Melani Badz, @iam.melani.badz

Jamaican-American artist Melani Badz is a musician’s musician, playing seven instruments in total. You may know them as multi-hyphenate creative Kleonaptra or as bassist Helmet Gyal, formerly of the band Purple Hurt. After a three-year hiatus, Badz is back to the music this time adding production to their repertoire. They recently produced “ILY” on singer Naomi Jenae’s new EP Hell Is for Lovers and are recording their own original music set to release in spring 2022. Until then you can catch the vibe on their Soundcloud where they keep Vybz Kartel, Wizkid, and Adekunle Gold in heavy rotation.

DJ Nah FR, @djnahfr

DJ Nah FR, aka Ayanna Brooks, left a corporate gig and started DJing during the pandemic when she finally had the time and resources to learn the craft. She now spins regularly at Lost Society, Looking Glass Lounge, and vegan restaurant & bar sPACYcLOUD. She keeps Young Thug, Rico Nasty, and Tame Impala in heavy rotation and is currently listening to Baby Keem’s The Melodic Blue.

Trilla Kay, @trillakay_

Artist Trilla Kay is a NE DC native and Towson University graduate. You can catch her live at Wild Days rooftop deck at the Eaton Hotel twice a month. She keeps Erykah Badu, Don Toliver, and Hiatus Kaiyote in heavy rotation and is currently listening to Young Thug’s Punk. Trilla also records her own original music and her new single, “Spreaders” ft. Bri Mafia & Charlie Monroe drops on Spotify & Apple Music Nov 3.
