What’s going on DC? March 12th, 2021

You know what time it is! It’s another great week for What’s Going on D.C.?

In we’re so proud news, DMV’s own Jermaine Fowler maked his lead debut in the blockbuster sequel, Coming to America 2. His lead role has him starring as Eddie Murphy’s son. We know Eddie loves the DMV, as we just reported on him set to play our late great Mayor Marion Barry.
Since we are on the topic of movies, DMV’s Own, Tressa Azarel, is taking the production world by storm as her Megamind Media company has partnered with BET HER to produce new works on the network. She is working with some amazing people including, Vivica Fox, Mona Scott Young, Yandy Smith and more!

In sports, The Washington Football team announces they are getting rid of cheerleaders and will now have a co-ed dance squad! What are your thoughts on this? Does the DMV care about the cheerleaders? Also in sports, our soccer team, DC United, just released their preseason schedule. If you’re a soccer fan, it’s time to get ready for an epic season!
In let’s eat news, Black-owned food businesses can now use the Navy Yard Kitchen Space, rent-free under a new program with Ubereats’ new social equity program. Sandlot Southeast, an indoor/outdoor cultural event space and shipping container bar in Navy Yard, will grant temporary and rent-free access to Black-owned businesses to help during the pandemic. This is such an epic way to make sure Black restaurants succeed. Shoutout to the founder of Sandlot, Ian “iCan” Callender for his efforts.

In, you said what? news, Cicadas are coming back to this area. But, the new version of the bug is said to be edible and taste like shrimp. I can’t make this stuff up. Apparently, Cicadas are related to shrimp and lobster and can be eaten just like them. Are any fellow Washingtonians up to try this? Let us know!

In, where the money at? news, the U.S. House of Representatives and President Biden have moved forward with 1.9 trillion in COVID-19 relief this week. You know what that means, you get a stimmy, you get a stimmy, you get a stimmy! Lol.

Also in politics, Merrick Garland has been officially confirmed as the new Attorney General under the Biden Administration. Make sure you do your research if this is all new to you. You’ll want to learn his policies. Let’s stay on top of what’s happening here in our country and our city.
Speaking of what’s happening in our city, a new mural honoring inaugural poet Amanda Gorman is going up near Dupont Circle. We at the Bridge are here for it!

We are also here for D.M.V.’s Rico Nasty, who just dropped the HD version of her album Nightmare Vacation with Amazon Music. We see you Black Queen! Another Black queen, Southeast D.C.’s own Taraji P. Henson has a message for Women’s Month and International Women’s Day. Take a look now on #WGODC.

In Maryland, Governor Larry Hogan lifts all capacity limits on restaurants, bars, gyms, and churches. D.C. reveals that the next generation area code will be 771. The 202 area code seems to have run out of phone numbers. Starting next year, 771 will be the new DC area code. How do you guys feel about 202 being no more?
