New Festival “It’s Just For Us” Brings Raw, Underground Hip-Hop Energy to the Howard Theatre

Staff

On May 23rd, 2025, the Howard Theatre will host the inaugural HighTide Presents: It’s Just For Us Music Festival (IJFU)—a bold, genre-focused experience curated for alternative and underground hip-hop fans. Spearheaded by D.C.’s own TyFontaine, IJFU offers something the District has long needed: an accessible, all-ages space that fuses national buzz with local heat.

Designed with intention, IJFU bridges the gap between emerging mainstream acts and D.C.’s most promising underground talent, delivering a lineup that’s as future-forward as it is rooted in homegrown authenticity. The stage will host heavy-hitters like Karrahbooo, Nino Paid, TyFontaine, El Cousteau, Thirteendegrees, and Tae Dawg, alongside electric DJ sets by chaseonaux, Trilla Kay, Sleepy, and TummTumm. Art direction by Dieglo and exclusive merch from Saints will add extra creative dimensions to the night.

But this isn’t just a concert. It’s a statement.

Held at the iconic Howard Theatre, a cultural landmark in D.C.’s historic Shaw neighborhood, IJFU taps into nearly a century of Black artistic legacy. With a flexible venue capacity between 700–1,200 and close proximity to Metro stops, top restaurants, and hotels, the location ensures an intimate yet high-impact environment, perfect for a night of discovery, energy, and community.

Sponsored by Luxe-T and DTLR, IJFU is grounded in cultural relevance. It’s about more than music—it’s about space. A space for young fans (especially those aged 18–34, the fastest-growing demographic for these genres) to feel seen. A space for alternative and underground sounds to flourish outside of internet algorithms. A space for D.C.’s music ecosystem to showcase its depth and breadth alongside rising national stars.

In a city known for its go-go roots and evolving hip-hop scene, IJFU is a welcome expansion of the musical spectrum. As hyper-pop and underground hip-hop explode across platforms and venues nationwide, D.C. is putting its own stamp on the movement.

This one’s not for the mainstream. It’s Just For Us.
