DC-based muralist Chris Pyrate is bringing his signature cherry blossom street art to Georgetown Park to celebrate cherry blossom season. Pyrate’s public art installation, “Georgetown was on the Journey,” will feature art displays throughout the complex from East Market Lane to Grace Street Plaza and will be on view to visitors through May.
“I look forward to contributing a public art installation to Georgetown Park. This partnership signifies how far DC has come with embracing artistic expression throughout the city,” said Chris Pyrate, a visual multimedia artist from Southeast DC known for his signature cherry blossom art murals throughout the city. Pyrate has previously worked with notable clients, including Grammy Award-winning musician Lupe Fiasco, Nike, and the Washington Wizards.
Georgetown Park, owned by real estate investment and management firm Jamestown, will be transformed into a canvas and platform to showcase the talent of local DC artist Chris Pyrate, enlivening the property while uplifting the Georgetown community. To help promote youth in the arts and spread the joy of Pyrate’s iconic artwork, Georgetown Park is partnering with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington to host a meet and greet to unveil the first two phases of the art installation.
“This project couldn’t be more special to me as a DC native. Georgetown was always an escape for me outside of Southern Avenue, where I grew up. I worked my first job here as a design artist on Wisconsin Avenue, so to be commissioned to bring my artistry back to such a historic neighborhood is a full circle moment,” said Chris Pyrate.
Georgetown Park is a popular retail destination between Georgetown’s two Main Streets and the historic C&O Canal. After purchasing the complex in 2014, Jamestown transformed it from an enclosed mall into a collection of restaurants and premier retailers with dedicated frontage on M Street and Wisconsin Avenue. The property is located minutes from downtown Washington, D.C., and is easily accessible from Northern Virginia, Maryland, and the greater D.C. Metro Area. Later this year, the property will welcome a new Italian market and restaurant from James Beard award-winning restaurateur Stephen Starr and Michelin star chef Nancy Silverton.
