On February 25th, 2024, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library is poised to host the premiere of “Free The People,” a compelling 3-part docuseries capturing the essence of the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement in DC.
The series is anticipated to converge history, art, and activism, marking a fitting tribute to Black History Month. Doors will open at 1 PM, inviting attendees to a firsthand experience of a movement that has reshaped the societal landscape.
Behind this powerful film are directors Kintsugi Kelley-Chung, known as Uncle Iso, and Andrew Jasiura, or Jazzy. Uncle Iso, a University of Maryland graduate with an English and African American Studies background, has merged his academic prowess with a deep-rooted passion for visual storytelling and social justice. His previous work, which garnered attention in the Washington Post, set the stage for his impactful documentation of the BLM movement.
With a B.A. in Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies from the same university, Jazzy brings a unique perspective shaped by his studies of international criminal justice systems. His insights into the dynamics of police states, enriched by his research on the Hong Kong revolution, have been pivotal in capturing the essence of the movement in DC.
“Free The People” promises an objective look at the BLM events spanning from Juneteenth to Thanksgiving. It aims to showcase the peaceful demonstrations, the intense confrontations, and the growth of a mutual aid network that continues to thrive. The series will also feature never-before-seen footage and personal stories from the families of Deon Kay and Karon Hylton.
The premiere is set to be more than just a viewing; it will be an immersive experience. After the screening, a panel discussion with the directors and activists will offer deeper insights. The day will conclude with an afterparty at The Alumni Spot, extending the spirit of the documentary into a celebration of community and resilience.
