With “darty” season in full swing at Howard University, the need for good music and good vibes is at an all-time high. We sat down with one of the hottest DJs on the scene, who’s turning up the heat for spring. Madyson Patterson, aka DJ WILDCHILD, talks with us about her up-and-coming career as a DJ and gives us some insight into her creative process and motivation.
Psychology Pre-Med student by day and sound mixing DJ by night, DJ WILDCHILD lives her life like Hannah Montana. With her career taking off within the last few months, she works hard to balance her multifaceted career and lifestyle. Between studying, being a full-time nanny, and practicing mixing and perfecting her craft, she embodies what it means to be a triple threat.

“Definitely just putting school first… I’m at Howard to do school and not to DJ, so I have to keep that in the back of my mind,” said DJ WILDCHILD.
Taking a very calculated approach to learning the inner workings of DJing, she studied with her mentor DJ ASC to learn what it takes to make it in the industry. DJ WILDCHILD uses what she learned to foster a cohesive approach to sound mixing by shadowing him at his gigs and events.
“I feel like when I DJ, I’m more about the overall sound…that’s my focus as of right now. Instead of focusing on tricks and cool stuff, I’ve been working on timing, beats, and matching tempos,” said DJ WILDCHILD.
DJ WILDCHILD’s affinity for what’s trending comes naturally to her, as she always surrounds herself with music. From listening while working to the shower and in the car, she indulges in what’s popular to know what will get the crowd going. With her favorite artists being Future, Lil Uzi, and Drake, DJ WILDCHILD uses the hottest Hip-Hop and R&B tracks to keep the crowd hype.
DJ WILDCHILD’s “why” is simple; she saw a need for black women’s representation in the industry and was passionate about working for her spot. Wanting to make her mark on the scene and push herself to step outside her comfort zone into a new environment, she urges all black women to invest in themselves financially and mentally to see success in all endeavors. “I can’t really do things if I don’t have passion behind them; it won’t fulfill me,” said DJ WILDCHILD.

“I just had to put on my headphones, forget what other people were saying, and just do it for myself,” said DJ WILDCHILD.
