What’s going on DC? February 11th, 2021

What’s Going On DC, it’s another beautiful week here in the District, full of Black Excellence. Without further adieu, let’s get started.

First up, Andre Hopson a.k.a Dre The Mayor and Kie Fair a.k.a Mr. Fair, have announced their new creation coming to the area. It’s called BWI Motorsports, a new automotive bespoke to aid all your custom auto needs. Congratulations to these Black kings.

Also, Justin “Yaddiya” Johnson has taken Moechella to a higher level with the opening of the first-ever Moechella Pop-up Shop, which featured his newly released photo book entitled “Long Live GoGo, The Movement”. The book features photography from the Moechella movement by local photographers.

In music DJ Malcolm Xavier of 93.9 WKYS-DC & creative events company Joy Club DC, has been tapped to create the official Black History Month playlist for the fast-pizza shop “&Pizza”. The playlist can be found now on Spotify. This is major for the area and it’s beautiful to see our Kings continuing to progress. In other music-related news, DC Cares has announced a grant program for all musicians who have not been able to receive Unemployment Insurance & Pandemic Unemployment Assistance funding. In fashion, beloved apparel and lifestyle brand The Museum has been featured in the Washington Wizards “Black Owned Spotlight” segment, oh we know that’s LITTY!

In politics, DC just proposed legislation that would stop third-party delivery apps like Door Dash, Grub Hub & Postmates from listing restaurants on their platforms without restaurants’ permission. Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie is helping with a solution. This means that you just might have to drive to some of your favorite restaurants instead. We’ll stay on top of that story.

Aye DC! Have you ever wanted Waffle House but couldn’t find one close enough? Well, there’s a new petition circulating to bring one in town and the sign-ups are increasing, I don’t know about you, but a Waffle House sure sounds nice right about now. Also in food news, we welcome a new Roaming Rooster in Tenley Town. They’re known for some of the best chicken sandwiches in town. Lastly, The Washingtonian Magazine has released it’s list of eight new Black-Owned Restaurants to try. The post includes Creole On 14th, In A Minute Cafe, Kitchencray, Mélange, Motown Square Pizza, Queen Mothers, Roaming Rooster, & Swahili Village.

In health news, Kaiser Permanente has joined with The Greater Washington Region to encourage people to ‘Go Red’, by being healthy for good with the Go Red for Women Campaign for the American Heart Association. Speaking of health, let’s get into our mental health and wellness with DC’s own Tracie Jade of Equanimity Nation as she hosts a virtual meditation session live on Zoom Meeting App. I will be there to find my zero and meditate. We need some healing in this crazy climate.

Lastly, in DC, an at-home coronavirus test has been announced by the White House and promises to be available soon. Officials announced they are buying 8.5 million rapid tests that can be taken at home. I don’t know about you but outside is almost here. Can you taste it?
