In a remarkable fusion of art and history, Homme DC Gallery has announced the grand opening of its latest location in the historic Union Station building in Washington, DC. The gallery’s inaugural exhibition, “High-Speed Freedom: The History of the Underground Railroad,” featuring the compelling works of graphic artist Maurice James Jr., will open on April 12, 2024.
Maurice James Jr., a self-taught contemporary artist and graphic designer based in Washington, DC, is renowned for his ability to blend iconic American pop culture with powerful Black imagery. His work celebrates Black Love, Beauty, and Power, offering a fresh perspective on Black representation in mainstream pop culture.
Growing up in the Wynnefield section of West Philadelphia, Maurice was a collector of comic books and baseball cards and an avid film enthusiast. His artistry reflects a deep-seated desire to see Black People portrayed as heroes in popular narratives. By integrating digital graphics and merging genres, Maurice’s art seeks to answer intriguing questions such as “What if Black folklore were a mainstay of comic book culture?” and “How would Black artistic genius be perceived if revered as divine?” His work envisions a world where Black People and Black Culture are seamlessly woven into the fabric of Pop Culture.
“High-Speed Freedom” explores the significant history of the Underground Railroad and the struggle for freedom by enslaved African Americans. This historical reference supports Maurice’s work, highlighting the ceaseless journey towards freedom and empowerment.
