On Thursday, April 25, the Washington Informer BRIDGE successfully hosted its free, ticketed Earth Day Creative Salon, “People vs. Plastics,” at Hill Prince, a lively Black-owned neighborhood bar on the iconic H Street corridor. The event aimed to inspire actionable solutions and raise awareness about the urgent need to address plastic waste in the DMV area.

Aligning with EARTHDAY.ORG’s 2024 initiative, the Earth Day Creative Salon tackled the critical issue of plastic waste. Christopher Bradshaw, Executive Director of Dreaming Out Loud Inc., moderated an engaging discussion with local panelists at the forefront of combating plastic pollution. The panelists included Alexis Dickerson, Senior Director of Community Conservation at the Potomac Conservancy; Michele Roberts, National Coordinator of the Environmental Justice Health Alliance; and Richard Bird, Owner of Home Court DC & DMV.

The dialogue highlighted the panelists’ efforts and explored practical steps individuals and communities can take to make a meaningful impact. Key takeaways from the panel included startling statistics on the amount of plastic waste generated in the DMV area and its detrimental effects on ecosystems and wildlife, insights into the disproportionate impact of plastic pollution on low-income communities and communities of color, inspiring stories of local businesses and organizations leading the charge in reducing plastic consumption and promoting sustainable alternatives, and practical tips and resources for individuals to adopt a more eco-friendly lifestyle and advocate for systemic change.

Attendees enjoyed complimentary plant-based hors d’oeuvres prepared by Chekesha Rashad from Eatopian Eats, signature artisanal cocktails served by Black-owned Ten To One Rum, and live music from world-renowned DJ Underdog. The event attracted a diverse and engaged audience, including local environmental lobbyists, traditional press members, social media influencers, community leaders, and concerned citizens.

“The Earth Day Creative Salon was a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play in combating plastic pollution,” said Lafayette Barnes, founder of The BRIDGE. “By bringing together different voices and perspectives, we were able to spark meaningful conversations and inspire collective action. The BRIDGE is committed to continuing this crucial dialogue and empowering our community to create a more sustainable future.”

The BRIDGE thanks the panelists, partners, and attendees for their participation and support. Guests were encouraged to donate a suggested $10 to the Washington Informer Charities, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering and uplifting communities across the DMV region.

As we reflect on the success of the Earth Day Creative Salon, let us remember that the fight against plastic pollution is ongoing. The Washington Informer BRIDGE invites the community to stay engaged, share their stories, and take action in their daily lives to create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable DMV area for generations to come.
