Catching up with my good friend Jarvis DuBois (@jduboisarts ) over Zoom, I can’t help but gush about how much I miss him. Happily recalling the openings, talks and galas we’ve been to, cutting up with Sheldon Scott and crew, “feeling nice,” and all the times we’ve worked and traveled together.

Then suddenly I question when is the next time we’ll be in that element again. “I miss dancing,” he says. In true Jarvis positivity, he has still found benefits to being home more, mostly the time to finally install his art collection.

Born in Orange County, California, Jarvis started his career after studying at UCLA and interning at The Hammer Museum on campus. In 2002, while working as an assistant registrar at the formative California African American Museum, he travelled to D.C. with a touring exhibition for The Black AIDS Conference. While in town, he had a spontaneous interview with the Smithsonian American History Museum, an entity that was rightfully impressed and quickly offered him a job.

He made the move to Chocolate City, residing here ever since.
